Mononucleosis, called “mono for short, is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, which is in thef herpes family of viruses. Other viruses in the herpes family cause cold sores on lips and illnesses like chickenpox. A lot of people also refer to Mono as the “kissing disease,” but you can get it from other ways than just kissing someone that has this illness.
People who have Mono feel very tired. Some also have a fever, sore throat, swollen neck, and/or sore muscles. A sore throat is the most common and most likely will progressively get worse before it gets better once you have contracted it. A lot of people also get enlarged organs, including the spleen or liver. The symptoms are a lot like the flu, but they can take a longer time to get over this illness than just the flu. If you think you have Mono you will need to go to the doctor and get tested for it. Treatment is based on your symptoms and will be determined by your health provider, but usually includes lots of rest and avoiding sports till you are all better.
