An ovarian cyst is a small sac or pouch filled with fluid or tissue that forms on one of your ovaries. Ovarian cysts are quite common in teens and young women.
While ovarian cysts can vary in size and type, in most cases, cysts are harmless and will go away on their own. In other cases, they may cause problems and need treatment.
Most cysts have no symptoms though some cysts cause discomfort such as pelvic pain or cramping or nausea and vomiting. If you suspect you have an ovarian cyst you should make an appointment to see your doctor. The doctor may perform an ultrasound to check to see if cysts are present. This does not mean you will need a pelvic exam.
