Opioids are drugs made from opium and it’s derivatives.
In their most common forms they fall under the category of narcotic pain relievers. Opioids are commonly prescribed by health care providers to relieve pain. They are often prescribed by doctors after surgery or to help patients with severe acute or chronic pain. If taken exactly as prescribed by a medical professional, opioids are safe to manage pain and rarely cause addiction. The problem occurs when they are abused. In fact, prescription painkillers are one of the most commonly abused drugs by teens after tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana.
Prescription opioids reduce pain levels, reduce the users anxiety level and often change their disposition. However, when abused, opioids are addictive. For more information on opioids, refer to http://teens.drugabuse.gov/drug-facts/opioids-and-pain-relievers.
Heroin is the illegal form of an opioid and has no medicinal use. For more information on heroin, refer to http://teens.drugabuse.gov/drug-facts/heroin.
If you think you or a friend has an addiction talk to a trusted adult or health care provider to get help.
