Ovarian cysts grow in response to the hormones in your body. They are quite common and most ovarian cysts will resolve (go away) on their own without any treatment. This involves doing nothing to treat the cyst and allowing your body to take care of it. Your health care provider may ask you to repeat an ultrasound (which takes pictures of your inside female organs) in approximately 4-6 week from the previous ultrasound to make sure that the cyst is gone. Your health provider may also talk to you about starting hormone pills (also called birth control pills) to prevent future cysts (the pills will not get rid of the current cyst you have). For cysts that do not go away over time, are growing or are causing pain to a girl, surgery is an option. Talk to your trusted guardian or parent as well as your health care provider if you have any questions.
