The insertion of an IUD (intrauterine device) will be different for everyone, but most people tolerate it being placed in the doctors office. Some people may haveĀ painĀ or discomfort with the insertion of the speculum into the vagina. Measuring the uterus and stabilizing the cervix may also uncomfortable for some. The insertion of the IUD itself can cause cramping and/or pain. Your medical provider may prescribe prescription strength Ibuprofen after the IUD insertion to help with any pain, discomfort or cramping.
If you have concerns about the process, you can speak to a trusted adult or medical professional. More information on IUD insertion can be found at http://www.bedsider.org.
