Marijuana isn’t physically addictive in that you will not gain a physical dependance on it like you would with cocaine or heroin. It will not cause you to experience physical symptoms of withdrawal if you go a period of time without using it. However, there can be a psychological addiction to marijuana.
The first time someone uses a drug of abuse, he or she experiences unnaturally intense feelings of pleasure. The reward circuitry in the brain is activated with dopamine (a normal neurotransmitter in the brain) carrying the message. Then the person needs more drugs just to bring the dopamine levels up to their normal levels. Larger amounts of the drug are needed to create a dopamine flood, or “high” an effect known as “tolerance.”
These brain changes drive a person to seek out and use drugs compulsively, despite negative consequences such as stealing, losing friends, family problems, or other physical or mental problems brought on by drug abuse this is addiction. It impairs your ability to think clearly, to feel OK without drugs, and to control your behaviors. These all contribute to the compulsive drug seeking and use that is addiction.
